  • Tree Felling - If there is a plenty of space available the tree can be felled directly from where it stands
  • Dismantling - Often trees are located in inconvenient spaces. In this case the tree can be taken down with ropes piece by piece in a safe, strategic & controlled manner without damaging property.
  • Pruning to British Standards 3998 'recommendation for tree work' - This standard gives general recommendations for tree work.
  • Formative Pruning - Ideally 3-5 years after planting (depending on tree growth rate and growing environment etc) newly planted trees should be assessed whether they need formative pruning to produce a tree which in maturity will be free from any major physical weakness.  Formative pruning can also be used to influence tree structure and form depending on species and location.
  • Crown Lifts - Crown lifting is carried out to increase the clearance between the ground level and the lower branches either to allow vehicular or pedestrian access below the tree, to clear sight lines, improve views or allow light to penetrate to the ground
  • Crown Reductions - This is where the crown of the tree is made smaller, either all over or in a certain area to redress an imbalance of the shape. As with crown thinning no more the 30% of the foliage should be removed in one year and the out-come should be to leave the tree looking as natural as possible and not leaving large thick branch ends on the extremities of the crown.
  • Crown Thinning - is the removal of a small percentage of secondary and small live branches to produce a uniform density of foliage around an evenly spaced branch structure. It is usually confined to broad-leaves species. Crown thinning includes crown cleaning and does not alter the overall size or shape of the tree.
  • Pollarding - To the novice "pollarding" and "topping" seem to be similar terms, however the former boasts a superior pedigree. More thought goes in to pollarding. For example only certain types of trees respond well to the practice, so pollarding is limited to those particular types of trees. In contrast with topping, pollarding is ideally first performed when a tree is young and 'topping' should always be the last resort.
  • Deadwooding - The main reason deadwooding is performed is safety. Situations that usually demand removal of deadwood is trees that overhang public roads, houses, public areas and gardens, the other is amenity value, i.e. a tree with a large amount of deadwood throughout the crown looks more aesthetically pleasing with the deadwood removed. The physical practice of deadwooding can be carried out most of the year though not when the tree is coming into leaf. The deadwooding process speeds up the tree's natural abscission process. It also reduces unwanted weight and wind resistance and can help overall balance.
  • Stump grinding / Stump Removal - The stump grinding machine will mechanically grind out the main root plate, leaving fine sawdust. Although stump grinders can be hired in Pembrokeshire, they are potentially hazardous and are only for trained operatives that can use the machinery safely. Some roots will inevitably be left in the ground but the majority should eventually rot down.
